Rice Bran Oil is good for Diabetes management

by Food Drinks Innovation

The present-day lifestyle and work pressures play a havoc with our body as we do not prioritize our health amidst our busy schedules. This triggers several lifestyle related diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity etc. Most of these can be avoided by making changes in our lifestyle and eating habits.  One of the changes that needs to be done is to choose the right quantity and variant of the cooking oil being used to cook the food.

Rice bran oil can offer various health benefits due to its unique nutritional composition when incorporated sensibly into a diabetic diet. Rice bran Oil contains some functional compounds, such as γ-oryzanol, tocopherols, tocotorienols, and dietary fiber. It has been reported that γ-oryzanol has anti-oxidative (Rungratanawanich et al., 2018), anti-diabetic (Jung et al., 2015), and lipid-lowering effects (Wilson, Nicolosi,Woolfrey, & Kritchevsky, 2007). However, it’s important to emphasize moderation. While rice bran oil contains beneficial components, it is calorie-dense like any other oil. Keeping portions in check helps maintain a healthy caloric intake, a crucial aspect of diabetes management.

Certain foods, including those containing specific nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and antioxidants, might also contribute to improving insulin sensitivity. However, individual responses to dietary changes can vary. It is essential to consider an overall healthy lifestyle like taking a balanced diet, doing regular exercise, weight management, reduced stress and adequate sleep are important for an overall wellbeing, rather than focusing solely on one aspect.

Rice bran oil possesses several components that may contribute to improved insulin sensitivity and overall health, which indirectly affects blood sugar management like:

  1. Healthy Fats: Rice bran oil contains a good balance of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These healthier fats, when incorporated into the diet, can positively impact insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation.
  2. Omega Fatty Acids: The presence of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in rice bran oil may support better insulin sensitivity, potentially reducing the risk of insulin resistance.
  3. Antioxidants: The antioxidants found in rice bran oil, such as tocopherols and tocotrienols, may have protective effects on cells. By reducing oxidative stress, they could indirectly improve insulin sensitivity.
  4. Low Saturated Fat Content: Compared to certain other oils high in saturated fats, rice bran oil has lower levels. This healthier fat profile may positively influence insulin sensitivity and cardiovascular health.

While these components in rice bran oil may offer benefits for insulin sensitivity, it’s important to remember that they work best within a balanced diet and lifestyle. Moderation in the use of oils, including rice bran oil, is key due to their calorie density. Pairing this oil with other healthy food choices, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep forms a holistic approach to improving insulin sensitivity and managing diabetes.

Adding to this Mr. P. Chandra Shekhara Reddy, Sr. Vice President, Sales & Marketing – Gemini Edibles and Fats India Ltd said, “According to experts, Oryzanol and other ingredients in rice bran oil are important to ensure a better health of people. Freedom physically refined Rice Bran Oil contains over 10,000+ parts per million (PPM) of Oryzanol.  This acts as a potent antioxidant. Rice Bran Oil’s balance of healthy fats, antioxidants, and phytosterols can potentially aid in managing blood sugar levels, supporting heart health, and promoting better cholesterol control. Therefore, to lead a healthy life people should eat balanced diet with portion control, use the right cooking oil like Freedom Rice Bran Oil, do regular exercise, relax and take adequate sleep.  Diabetic Patients should monitor vitals regularly and take the advice of experts to ensure proper management of the disease.”
