India’s First Mahua Spirit Enters Duty – Free Travel Retail With Six Brothers Mahura

by Food Drinks Innovation

South Seas Distilleries has introduced Six Brothers Mahura, a heritage Mahua spirit derived from the Mahua flower of the Madhuca longifolia tree, to India’s duty-free travel retail channel, marking the debut of a Mahua-based spirit in the country’s travel retail space. The launch places one of India’s oldest forest-based distilling traditions onto the global premium stage, offering international travellers a distinctly Indian Mahua spirit experience.

Mahua holds deep cultural and economic significance across India’s tribal heartlands, where the blossoms of the Madhuca tree and the Mahua flower have been used for centuries to craft traditional spirits. Often compared to the role of agave in Mexico’s tequila tradition, the Mahua flower represents a uniquely Indian ingredient with the potential to anchor a globally recognizable Mahua spirit identity.

During the colonial era, restrictive excise regulations and forest laws limited traditional Mahua distillation and access to forest produce, pushing a centuries-old community craft to the margins. Its entry into duty-free retail signals a moment of revival, bringing this indigenous heritage Mahua spirit back into the spotlight for global audiences.

The duty-free launch features expressions from South Seas Distilleries’ premium portfolio, including the heritage-inspired Six Brothers Mahura as well as the Crazy Cock Indian Single Malt Whisky range. The Crazy Cock collection, featuring expressions such as Rare, Dhua and the Madhuca heritage edition, represents India’s modern single malt movement, combining traditional craftsmanship with bold experimentation alongside the rising global interest in Mahua spirit.

The Madhuca edition of Crazy Cock is finished in mahua-seasoned casks, creating a distinctive flavour profile that blends Indian single malt expertise with the nuanced floral character of the Mahua flower and other indigenous forest botanicals.

Hamavand Chinoy, Chief Operating Officer, South Seas Distilleries, said:
“The entry of Mahua into duty-free retail is a cultural milestone for India. By bringing this heritage spirit to global travellers, we are showcasing an ingredient that has been cherished by tribal communities for centuries. It is also a proud moment to present Indian craftsmanship through our Six Brothers and Crazy Cock portfolios to audiences from around the world.”

Travel retail has long served as a gateway for discovery and premiumisation, introducing international travellers to distinctive spirits from around the world. The presence of Mahua-based expressions in this channel places India’s indigenous distillation heritage alongside globally celebrated spirits.

Beyond its cultural significance, Mahua harvesting supports rural livelihoods and is traditionally carried out through community-led forest collection practices. This reinforces the spirit’s connection to sustainability, environmental stewardship and inclusive economic growth.

With global drinkers increasingly seeking new flavour experiences and culturally rooted luxury, Mahua’s nuanced floral character and heritage-rich provenance position it as a distinctive addition to the premium spirits landscape.
