The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has launched a dedicated licensing and registration system for Ayurveda Aahara products on its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal. This development marks a pivotal move toward bringing traditional Ayurvedic foods under a structured regulatory framework.
Through this new ‘Kind of Business’ (KoB) category, manufacturers across India can now easily apply for licenses to produce and market Ayurveda-based food products, ensuring these ancient formulations align with modern food safety and quality standards.
The framework aims to formalize and streamline the Ayurveda Aahara segment, bridging the gap between traditional Ayurvedic wisdom and contemporary food practices. Grounded in the Ayurvedic principle of personalized nutrition, which emphasizes diets tailored to individual body constitutions (prakriti), this initiative promises to create a regulated, trustworthy ecosystem for Ayurvedic foods in India.
In support of this transition, the FSSAI has already issued an official list of 91 approved Ayurveda Aahara recipes, as per an order dated July 25, 2025. This provides Food Business Operators (FBOs) with pre-approved formulations that ensure compliance with both Ayurvedic authenticity and food safety norms.
The move is expected to stimulate growth in both the Ayurveda and food industries, offering consumers safer and standardized products that can complement traditional healthcare practices.
Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, this initiative underscores the Government of India’s vision to integrate ancient Ayurvedic knowledge with modern regulatory mechanisms—enhancing public health, industry innovation, and global confidence in India’s holistic food traditions.
