The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has instructed Karnataka’s State Food Safety Department to investigate reports of plastic sheets being used in the steaming process of idlis at some local restaurants.
This action follows rising concerns over food safety and hygiene, with the FSSAI calling for immediate intervention against any establishments violating safety regulations. The State Food Safety Department has been directed to take strict action against Food Business Operators (FBOs) and hotels found using plastic in food preparation.
FSSAI has emphasized that the use of plastic sheets during steaming poses significant health risks, as harmful chemicals from plastic may leach into food under high temperatures. “The use of low-quality or non-food-grade plastics in food preparation, particularly under high heat, poses a serious health hazard,” said FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao. Such plastics can release toxic substances like bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and other harmful chemicals, which can contaminate food and lead to adverse health effects.
The FSSAI is working closely with state food safety officials to ensure a thorough investigation and strict enforcement of food safety regulations. The authority reiterated the importance of using only food-grade materials and following hygienic practices in food preparation. It urged restaurants and food businesses to adhere to traditional steaming methods or use approved food-safe alternatives to prevent chemical contamination and ensure consumer safety.
